Home My Story Scholarship Beyond

Shirley Brooks-Jones writes about

In 2002 we had approximately $50,000 (US) including $15,000 an anonymous donor for the GANDER FLIGHT 15 SCHOLARSHIP FUND in addition to a number of other pledge. In 2004 we approach the $1,000,000 mark. I want to thank everyone for their support and generosity!

I am continuing to make contacts with individuals, organizations and foundations so that we can continue to increase the size of the fund. I know the fund will continue to grow.

We continue to work closely with Mayor Hooper of Lewisporte plus a committee there to develop guidelines for selection of the recipients.

The Columbus Foundation of Columbus, Ohio, is housing and administering the fund. Established in 1943, the Columbus Foundation is a community foundation and a qualified public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation ranks seventh in the nation in assets among community foundations and the market value of assets was over $650 million as of the end of 2001. More than 100 scholarship funds, with a combined market value in excess of $25 million, have been established at the Foundation. The Foundation staff is qualified and experienced in administering scholarship funds. Their wonderful staff helps us with investing the money so as to help it "grow" much larger in the future, and also acknowledge all contributions as well as provide follow-up to pledges and provides what contributors may need for tax purposes. They have been absolutely wonderful to work with.

I continue to be grateful to all the passengers and crew of Delta Flight 15. Without their pledges and encouragement, this effort would have been far more difficult to accomplish.

In June 2002 I went back to Lewisporte for the graduation ceremony and as the flight's representative I had the honor to present 14 scholarships. In June 2003 it was 15 scholarships!

Donations to the scholarship fund for the benefit of students from Lewisporte, Newfoundland, enrolled in college or post high school technical/vocational training should be payable to: "GANDER FLIGHT 15 SCHOLARSHIP FUND"
